Hair Care – Innovative Sustainability Is In Demand

Sustainability in hair care is more in demand in hairdressing salons today than ever before. Customers of exclusive hairdressing salons are not satisfied with just a few natural ingredients. They are interested in products and services that are sustainable across the board. Master hairdresser Nesrin Obermeier shows how hair care is changing to meet these demands and what is important now.

Modern consumers of haircare associate sustainability with a dual requirement: on the one hand, the care products should build up the hair in a natural way without damaging or weighing it down. This sets the customer apart from shampoos that use silicone and similar ingredients to achieve a beautiful surface appearance – but are not good for the hair itself.

Sustainable hair care: a demand on several levels

On the other hand, the desire for sustainability goes even further. The cosmetic product should be environmentally friendly. This applies to production, packaging and dismantling after use. The third important requirement is that customers want to receive care that is associated with a small wellness experience. It should regularly provide pleasant moments in everyday life. The hair is built up individually through long-term use so that it i

What are the most important natural ingredients?

For a long time, sustainability and innovation were seen as opposites. Today it is clear that the two can be combined well. When it comes to the composition of ingredients, professional hair care is once again focusing more on nature. And it is pursuing a minimalist approach. Few and carefully selected extracts of the highest quality are in demand. The better they are matched to the hair type, cut and needs, the more beneficial the care.

Manufacturers refrain from overlong lists of ingredients with numerous synthetic additives. One reason for this is that many of them are difficult to break down ecologically. Not only the well-known microplastics are a problem for ecosystems. Secondly, many old standard products put unnecessary strain on the hair during washing.

„Superfood“ for the hair

There is often talk of superfoods in the food sector. A similar term for natural care has not yet been coined. However, there are natural ingredients that have a similarly powerful effect on hair care. The first of these is aloe vera. The grass tree plant, which originates from the Arab world, noticeably soothes the scalp and moisturizes the hair. Secondly, it is worth using argan oil. It supplies the hair with antioxidants and vitamins. This strengthens the hair’s natural substance and shine. This ingredient is the perfect choice for damaged hair.

A third fuel is coconut oil. With the lauric acid it contains, it promises intensive regeneration of damaged hair. The application ensures smooth hair that feels pleasant to the touch. The fourth reliable extract comes from green tea. This is a natural source of polyphenols and antioxidants. It therefore promotes a healthy scalp and protects the hair from harmful environmental influences.

Sustainable impact through tailored care advice

Individual needs are decisive for the lasting effect of a care product. Experienced hairdressers therefore rarely recommend a standard shampoo. They tailor care products to what the hair needs. In my own salon, I have developed an in-house care range for this purpose. This allows me to select care recommendations to suit the client. At the same time, I have control over the ingredients and sustainable production.

Current research into the care effect of natural ingredients shows how well they help the hair. Wheat proteins and keratin are worth mentioning here. They repair brittle hair and strengthen its structure. Sunflower oil and green tea in turn offer protection against UV rays and are recommended for the care of colored hair.

Sustainable production chains protect the hair and the environment

When developing and distributing your own care range, it quickly becomes clear how many areas sustainability is an issue. A hair care product is the result of a comprehensive development process. Manufacturers pay attention to natural ingredients and environmentally friendly production. They develop concepts to guarantee the most sustainable packaging possible for the product and work with certified suppliers.

Fair production and low-emission transportation are also important. Only when all these things are taken into account will neither the hair nor the environment be unnecessarily burdened. And it is this dual requirement that customers have today. In order for them to understand that a product meets these requirements, the sustainability of the cosmetics must be communicated to the public.

Communicate innovative sustainability clearly

Collaboration with research departments and professional marketing is recommended at this point. Hairdressers can give customers suitable recommendations for hair care in their salon. However, two other things are required for good marketing and sustainable development.

Firstly, cooperation with laboratories that specialize in the research, testing and development of cosmetics. Secondly, cooperation with marketing experts is worthwhile. They make your own product known through campaigns and targeted press work. Only then will customers become aware of the exclusive cosmetics range and its promise of sustainability.
